PARK SLOPE TOWNHOUSE
Located in the heart of Park Slope’s landmarked district, this townhouse renovation focused on reimagining the kitchen as a functional and elegant gathering space while honoring the home's historic character. The new design blends contemporary functionality with subtle nods to the building's original detailing, creating a seamless dialogue between old and new.
At the center of the kitchen is a generous working island, surrounded by custom cabinetry whose profiles were inspired by the room’s restored wood-paneled wainscot. The cabinetry was carefully stained to match the original woodwork, unifying the old and new elements within the space. Where traditional double-hung windows once stood, large glass French doors were installed, opening onto the deck and bringing abundant natural light into the previously north-facing room. This new connection to the exterior enhances both the functionality and the ambiance of the kitchen.
Anchoring the space is a dramatic Calacatta marble range hood, positioned centrally along the cabinet wall. Flanked by floor-to-ceiling glass-fronted cabinets, the hood becomes a sculptural focal point. The marble counter continues uninterrupted beneath the integrated induction cooktop, then rises seamlessly up the wall to meet the ceiling. The veining of the stone remains visible through the open-backed shelving and glass cabinet doors, giving the space a sense of depth and continuity.
A former exterior door was transformed into a hidden pantry, cleverly integrated into the cabinetry without disrupting the clean lines of the design. Modern systems were discreetly incorporated, with new heating and cooling units concealed within the cabinet soffit.
